Rosario, Mexican single mother, left her village for years ago to work illegally in Los Angels for financially supporting her family in Mexico.  Nine years old Carlos is her son living with his grandmother until she die.  Now Carlos is left alone, and he decides to join his mother in America. Carlos’ solo journey from his rural Mexican village to L.A. starts with unknown circumstances, but ends with full of joy.

メキシコからの不法労働者として米国で働く母を慕って、幼い少年が一人米国への侵入を企てる。やるせなく切ない貧困の状 況の中で、緊迫感の連続にもかかわらず、作品の最終にどっと涙がこみ上がるのは、全編を貫いているゆるぎない愛の力のなせる業である。世界を取り巻く不法 労働者問題を、政治色よりも親子の愛でクローズアップした作品。異文化の狭間で生まれる経済格差は、避けることの出来ない日常のドラマを世界中で繰り広げ ている。

Young man Reda, who is born and raised in Southern France, has the wide cultural and generational gap with his Islamic father. Just several weeks before his college entrance exam, his father suddenly and strongly demands Reda to accompany his life long wishing trip to Mecca. With obligation as his son, Reda takes a driver’s seat, and his road trip with his stubborn father starts uncomfortably. From France, through Italy, Serbia, Turkey, Syria, Jordan to Saudi Arabia, the two experience and share remarkable moment together, and it changes their lives forever.

欧州に大勢の外国人労働者達が流れ込んだのは、1970年代であった。今や欧州では、出生地の市民権を持つ2世達が生ま れた国で社会人となっている。この映画もそんな時代の流れを脈々と語っている。フランス生まれの次男に車を運転させて、敬虔なるイスラム教徒の父親は、 メッカへの巡礼のたびに出かける。陸路様々な国境を越えながら、メッカへ向かう親子の世代の相違とそれでも引きつけ合う親子の情。経済や情報の流れがグ ローバル化しても、人の心は、古今東西そんなに変わるはずもない。フランス映画もこのような作品を作る時代になったことを、改めて知らされる。

The Long Walk Home

Odessa is a black housekeeper for Miriam Thompson and in her honor the bus boycott in 1955 Montgomery, Alabama, Odessa walks exhausting nine miles to and from the Thompson’s residence. Miriam offers Odessa a ride, and the two connects somehow against the social rough movement. Defying Miriam’s racist husband and the powerful White Citizen’s Council, Miriam and Odessa put their lives in danger for civil rights. Through unexpected experiences together, the two mothers, Odessa and Miriam’s friendship gets stronger, and the both stand up bravely.

人種隔離政策がまだあった米国アラバマ州モントゴメリーで、黒人のローザ･パークがバスの白人優先席に座り逮捕された事 件が1955年に起こった。それに抗議する為、バス乗車ボイコット運動が広がり、公民権運動のきっかけの一つになったが、米国ではこの歴史を知らない世代 が今や育っている。憎しみの歴史は忘れた方が良いかもしれないが、世界には同種の憎しみがまだ渦巻いている以上、この歴史の中を歩んできた巷の人達のドラ マも忘れてはならないだろう。黒人メイド役の若きWhoopi Goldbergとそのメイドを使う白人夫人役のSissy Spacekの熱演に、感動がこみ上がる。1950年代米国の白人社会と黒人社会のライフスタイルも、興味深い。

Rain

Nineteen years old Rain lives in a inner city community with her brother, sister and her mother. One day Rain faces the dangerous situation by gang members involved, and when it escalates to Rain’s life threaten her mother makes her big decision. Rain’s mother brakes her silence and contacts with Rain’s real mother. Her biological white mother agrees to protect Rain, and her new life with her white wealthy grandmother is arranged for her. Placing in a private boarding school and ensuring peaceful days, Rain’s covered talents on music blooms beautifully.

米国の隣り合わせにある貧富の差は常に社会に人々の警戒心と緊張感を生み出しているが、その人種的な貧富の差以上にステ イタス･カルチャー（教養）が重視される傾向は、米国でも強くなってきた。黒人ゲット-で育ったRainは教養と勇気のある、そして母親の愛に包まれて 育った女性であった。その彼女がゲットーのギャングに狙われて生命の危険におかされた時、やはり母の強い愛情が英断を下した。Rainの白人祖母役を大女 優Faye Dunawayが演じ、ストリーも単なるハッピーエンドではなく、見ごたえのある映画となっている。

IT時代のクローバル化の過程を、垣間見させてくれるユニークな映画。コメディーとはなっているが、笑いが目的ではなく、異文化理解にユーモアのオ ブラートで覆いながら、深刻になりがちなテーマを上手に紹介している。米国のコンピューター関連会社が、カスタマーサービスのコールセンターを人件費の安 いインドに移動した時代､そのマネージャーとして赴任した米国男性のカルチャーショックと、自分の内なる人間味に目覚めさせられる過程のストーリー。ボリ ウッド映画とは異なる視点からのインド文化の描き方も、興味深い。

The World’s Fastest Indian

Based on a true story of a motorcycle rider.  Burt Munro, New Zealand resident, wishes to challenge making the world record of motorcycle speed, and has been tinkering with his 1920s-era Indian brand motorcycle for years.  It’s in 1960s, as depending on his medication for his poor health, Burt decides to take his beloved old but refreshed bike to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, site of world record for speed racing. 68 years old passionate man leaves home with his motorcycle to cross the ocean and enters into American to travel its land until his final destination. Meeting with multiracial, multigenerational, multicultural people in America, everyone cheers his untried passion of his life long dream. Even after several his disappointed challenges, Burt grabs his dream onto his real life.

ニュージランド人バート･マンローは、1920年製インディアン（オートバイ）を自分で改造して1967年に 1000cc以下のオートバイ陸上速度記録を樹立したが、その実話に基ずいた映画。この記録達成の為に、米国ユタ州にあるボンネビルの塩湖へ一人出かける 老人を、当時６７歳のイギリス人俳優Anthony Hopkinsが熱演。スピードへの挑戦以上に、６８歳の外国人老人の情熱に、米国で出会う様々な人種やタイプの人達が、感化を受けてゆく様子が暖かく描 かれている。人間にとっての情熱が生み出すエネルギーは、異なるカルチャーや年代をも超えて、感動を与えてくれることを再認識させられる。
